WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ASSISTED LIVING AND A NURSING HOME?
An Assisted Living Facility is a residential program for individuals who need help with daily activities, such as personal care, mobility, medications, meal preparation or household chores, but who do not require skilled nursing care. Assisted living programs strive to create a safe, home-like setting that promote independence. Nursing Homes, on the other hand, are designed for people who need daily nursing care. These facilities have nursing staff available 24 hours a day, and have a range of medical services to meet the residents' health care needs.
WHO LIVES IN ASSISTED LIVING FACILITIES?
Currently, more than a million Americans live in an estimated 20,000 assisted living residences. Assisted living residents can be young or old, affluent or low income, frail or disabled. Residents may suffer from Alzheimer’s disease or other memory disorders. Residents may also need help with various activities of daily living.
WHAT LEVELS OF CARE CAN SUNSHINE GARDENS PROVIDE?
Sunshine Gardens is licensed to provide care that corresponds to the need of each individual resident. The range varies for residents who require a low level of assistance, to moderate and high levels of care. For example, a resident who needs a higher level of care may suffer from dementia and need extra help with daily activities, like dressing and showering, and have a complex medication schedule. We help determine an individualized plan for each resident.
WHAT QUALIFIES THE CARE-STAFF AT SUNSHINE GARDENS?
First, each new hire must pass a criminal background check. They then receive necessary shots administered by a local health agency. Care-givers then go through an orientation process and quality internal training program. On and off-site classes are offered throughout the year to enhance each care -givers quality of service and skill set.
WHAT HAPPENS IF MY LOVED-ONE’S CONDITION CHANGES AND SHE NEEDS MORE CARE THAN SHE DID WHEN SHE WAS ADMITTED?
If your loved-one is assessed at a lower level of care when he/she is admitted to Sunshine Gardens, he/she can continue to live here as long as his/her care needs are not greater than the highest level of care that we provide. If, however, your loved one needs a higher level of care than Sunshine Gardens provides, he/she may possibly transfer to our sister facility, Country Home, which offers a higher level of care, or possibly a nursing home.
DOES SUNSHINE GARDENS PROVIDE RESPITE CARE?
Respite care is short-term care that allows for families and care- givers to take a break and give their loved-ones another option of care. Respite care is possible at Sunshine Gardens. We strive for at least a one- month stay, so that residents have time to settle in, orient, and experience the virtues of Sunshine Gardens to the fullest. Respite care includes Sunshine Gardens West’s regular service packages and amenities.
DOES MEDICARE COVER ASSISTED LIVING?
Medicare does not cover the costs of assisted living, but there may be financial options for your loved one at Sunshine Gardens.

I'M NOT SURE HOW TO INITIATE A CONVERSATION WITH MY LOVED-ONE ABOUT MOVING FROM THEIR HOME, ANY IDEAS?
It’s important to be concise and use open-ended questions like. . .”Have you thought about. . .or Do you think you may want to . . .” You will find that your loved one will be more open to the idea if you address them in a way that gives them control over their own decisions, rather than telling them what to do. If your loved one is currently a safety risk, you may need to be more direct to encourage the move. Remember, having several, short conversations may prove more productive than one, life long altering discussion.
HOW DO I GET MY LOVED-ONE ADMITTED TO SUNSHINE GARDENS?
The staff at Sunshine Gardens will help to assess the condition of your loved-one and the necessary services that he/she will require. You will be asked to complete an admissions packet that includes a medical/physical assessment form. A deposit is required to reserve the room that suits your loved one. Once all necessary paperwork is completed and all questions answered, your loved one may move in. Call us to inquire about availability.
